  • Fisheries Topnotcher Gatulla and team bag 1st place in regional thesis competition

ISPSC graduates Russel T. Gatulla, who ranked Top 7 nationwide in the October 2026 Fisheries Professional Licensure Examination, and his fellow graduates from the Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) Narvacan Campus secured 1st Place in the Undergraduate Thesis Competition during the Regional Symposium of the Ilocos Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium (ILAARRDEC) on October 14–16, 2026, in Binalonan, Pangasinan.

The winning study, entitled “Preliminary Assessment of the Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of the Mottled Spinefoot (Siganus fuscescens) in Northern Luzon, Philippines Based on Single-Locus Polymerase Chain Reaction Analysis of Microsatellite Loci,” was conducted by Gatulla, Yvan Jennerick C. Baptista, Steyn Oliver C. Cabatic, Christian H. Cabuslay, and Joshua T. Galleta, under the advisership of Christian C. Molina.

The research recognition adds to Gatulla’s distinction as a Fisheries Professional Licensure Examination topnotcher and highlights the team’s contribution to fisheries research and aquatic sciences.

ISPSC was also represented by Dr. Solomon L. Anagaran, who presented the study entitled “Growth Performance of Organic SALT Uno Crossbreed Tilapia (Oreochromis molobicus) Fed Formulated Azolla Aquafeed with Fresh Azolla Supplementation.” The study was co-authored by Atty. Jose Q. Cabatu and Christian C. Molina. Mr. Wilfredo Salvador, Research Coordinator of ISPSC Narvacan Campus, also joined the delegation.

The symposium formed part of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) initiative, “Support to the Implementation of the Regional Collaborative Program (RCP) for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development in Region 1.” It brought together researchers, faculty members, and student researchers from participating institutions across the region to promote collaboration and share research outputs.

The participation and accomplishments of the Narvacan Campus delegation reflect the continuing support of ISPSC President Dr. Mario P. Obrero and Narvacan Campus Director Atty. Jose Q. Cabatu for research development, mentorship, and scientific engagement in fisheries and aquatic sciences.

Congratulations to Russel T. Gatulla and his fellow graduates, their research adviser, and the entire ISPSC Narvacan Campus research community!
