  • ISPSC co-hosts Candon City’s Educational Institutions’ Day

    Reinforcing its role in local academic collaboration, Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) served as co-host for Candon City’s Educational Institutions’ Day, bringing together schools across the city in a showcase of student talent and academic initiatives at the Candon City Arena today, March 22.

    Led by ISPSC President Mario P. Obrero, the college participated in the activity alongside Dr. Filipinas M. Gasalao, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Jonathan L. Dela Cruz, Vice President for Finance and Administration. Faculty and staff from the Main Campus, Candon Campus, and Central Administration also joined in support of the city’s education-centered celebration.

    In his fiesta message, Candon City Mayor Eric D. Singson, chairperson of the Fiesta Executive Committee 2026, underscored the city’s strong support for its learners and highlighted the value of perseverance.

    “Remember that in competition, as in life, those who succeed are those who prepared well, worked hard, and remained consistent,” he said.

    Vice Mayor Kristelle Singson, co-chairperson of the Fiesta Executive Committee 2026, also highlighted the vital role of education in community progress, stressing that it remains the foundation of all efforts toward development.

    In addition, City Councilor Lerisa M. Llanes, chairperson of the Educational Institutions’ Day, emphasized unity among institutions and sustained support for education as a driver of local development.

    Also present during the event were SPM Eric "Owen" Singson Jr, SPM Nestor Itchon, SPM George Valdez, SPM Aristeo Valdez, SPM Oseas Diasen, SPM Vincent Jan Tudayan, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federated President Jan Rhey Gacula, Dr. Gemmalyn Q. Tacuycuy, Schools Division Superintendent of SDO Candon City, and Executive Assistant to the Mayor Tony Gagarin.

    As the keynote speaker, Dr. Cherrie Melanie Ancheta-Diego, Director IV of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office I (RO1), represented by Engr. Angelica Q. Dolores, Supervising Education Program Specialist of CHED RO1, outlined the A.C.H.I.E.V.E. Agenda, CHED’s strategic framework for advancing Philippine higher education toward 2030.

    “We have to strengthen institutional partnerships to ensure accessible, inclusive, and transformative education,” she stated.
    She also commended today’s activity and noted that the people of Candon are truly blessed with leaders who uphold education as a central pillar of development.

    The celebration featured competitions in drum and lyre and show choir, with participating schools competing in three categories: Category A for elementary schools with above 180 enrollment, Category B for elementary schools with below 180 enrollment, and Category C for secondary schools.

    In Category A, Saint Joseph Institute emerged as champion, followed by Candon South Central School as first runner-up and Candon North Central School as second runner-up. In Category B, Bagani Tocgo Elementary School was declared champion, with Cubcubbuot Elementary School as first runner-up and Sto. Tomas Elementary School as second runner-up.

    Meanwhile, in Category C, Dr. Ricardo Gacula Memorial National High School secured the championship, while Candon City Information Technology National High School placed as first runner-up, and Candon City High School as second runner-up.
    Cultural presentations were also staged, with performances from various groups, including Kayaw Arts Guild of the ISPSC Main Campus, which showcased talents in dance, theater, music, and choral performance, contributing to the promotion of local heritage and the arts.

    The Educational Institutions’ Day is held in line with Candon’s Tobacco Festival and 25th cityhood anniversary, highlighting the city’s commitment to education and cultural preservation. (JGP)
