    NEWS ISPSC rises in WURI 2025 rankings, now at rank 264

    The Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC) has climbed to rank 264 in the 2025 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI), a significant rise from its previous rank of 295 in 2024.

    Released on July 10, 2025, during the 5th Hanseatic League of Universities Conference in Dumaguete City, Philippines, the WURI ranking honors higher education institutions that make fundamental contributions to society through innovation, inclusivity, and impactful practices.

    Under the Industrial Application category, ISPSC placed 38th with the project “From Spores to Stores: Empowering Communities through Industrial Mushroom Farming.” This initiative is led by Dr. Christian C. Gandeza, former Director for Extension, with team members Dr. Annabelle Francisco, former VP for Research, Extension, and Internationalization; Dr. Charisse Hayohay; Mr. Peter Paul Lazo; Dr. Ranec Azarias, former Director for Research; Ms. Jennifer Andrada; and Mr. Marvin Galano. Dr. Christian C. Gandeza and Ms. Jennielou G. Pigao authored the official write-up submitted to WURI.

    ISPSC also ranked 45th in the Culture and Values category for the program “Technolympics: Converging Skills for a Smarter World and Unleashing Creative Genius among Industrial-Technical Students,” led by the Supreme Student Council in partnership with Dr. Ranec A. Azarias, who also served as the official writer for the entry.

    In the Technology Development and Application category, the college earned the 51st rank for “EXTENSIONISTAS: Project Adal ken Ganwat - Tarabay, Panagsukisok, Sirib, Maipaay.” The program, also led by Dr. Gandeza, strengthens institutional linkages through education, research, and transformative outreach initiatives. Project members include Dr. Claire Antonette Santisteban; Dr. Imelda I. Binay-an; Dr. Mark Jaybee Galay; Dr. Eugene Gabriel; Dr. Larry Mostoles; Dr. Daniel Juan B. Ramirez; Dr. Maria Denisse Aguilan; Dr. Mary Rose Abaniz, Engr. Jacqueline Gumallaoi; Dr. Annie Dorada;  and Ms. Lei Ann Villegas. Dr. Gandeza officially wrote the entry.

    ISPSC President Mario P. Obrero welcomed the recognition as a reflection of the institution’s continuous progress under the Onwards UIP Framework. He emphasized that ISPSC’s rising rank in the WURI global listing affirms its evolving role in championing real-world innovation that is responsive and grounded in service.

    “This milestone is not only a recognition of our programs but also of the people behind them- the visionaries, the implementers, and the storytellers who ensure that our efforts reach the global stage,” Dr. Obrero said. 

    Other members of the Technical Working Group include Dr. Joy Bea, Dr. Mary Grace Gacusan, Dr. Noel Llamar, Ms. Tricia Gundran, Ms. Maria Ana Ilagan (former Director for Internationalization), and Ms. Cheryl Yague.

    Using 16 categories, the WURI measures how universities apply creative and practical approaches to address societal needs and promote development.

    ISPSC first entered the WURI rankings in 2023, placing in the Top 201-300 innovative universities worldwide. (JGP)
